The Assistant Commissioner, Division of Developmental Disabilities, is responsible for providing leadership for developmental disabilities programs throughout the State of Georgia. This position will provide leadership, direction and management of the developmental disabilities programs in our regions and facilities, while managing a significant organizational transformation. He/she will ensure the adoption of best practices across hospital and community based delivery and manage annual budget planning, strategic and operational planning and program and provider development. With input from Stakeholders, the Assistant Commissioner will develop and implement state policy for developmental disability services in community and state hospital settings. Additionally, he/she will set standards for services and the expected outcomes of those services purchased from providers through regionalized contracts.
Our current structure includes six (6) hospitals and six (6) regioins with approximately 7500 employees and a $1 billion budget. The Assistant Commissioner will report to the DBHDD Commissioner to upgrade, create and/or implement the departmental strategic goals and plans to accomplish critical departmental objectives and specific legislative agendas. The Assistant Commissioner serves on the Department Executive Leadership Team.
This position requires interaction with elected officials and other DBHDD stakeholders, including significant responsibilities associated with direction transitions to community based services.

The successful candidate will have a Master's degree in Psychology, Social Work or a related field and ten (10) years of executive experience managing MR/DD programs as well as experience in community based MR/DD programs. He/she will also have the ability to direct, manage and influence organization wide initiatives in an organization undergoing transformation and positively influence all categories of DBHDD stakeholders.
Additionally, ideal candidates should have one or more of the following:
- Doctorate in Psychology, Social Work or related field
- Experience transitioning persons with MR/DD to community services
- Experience in person-centered planning and self-determination
